US Powerboating has developed a course called Safe Powerboat Handling that includes hands-on, on-the-water instruction designed to teach anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a small motorboat and improve their boat handling skills. No previous experience is required! The US Coast Guard and the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) have approved this course and an increasing number of states have recognized it as meeting their requirements for a State Boating Education Certificate.

Capital Boater is happy to teach you the requirements to pass this course but prefers that students attain State certification to NASBLA standards first so that a condensed, one day Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling course can be completed. This option allows the student to take their time in studying for and passing the written exam before getting the hands-on portion started. Benefits include far cheaper cost, (roughly 50% less), more time to absorb the information, more flexibility in scheduling to accomplish the 16 hours of study and practice required for certification and the ability to focus on boating skills once underway.
A good place to start is the Boat US website, select your state and sign up for the free course.
Once you have attained NASBLA certification, contact me at Capital Boater to proceed to the certification stage. In the meantime, here are the two files you will need to get started for the on-water portion of your training.
